How many computers do you use ?
Martin Hansen writes:
At home my Iyonix and StrongARM Risc PC sit networked together on my desk. That's where most of my serious computing is done. All the program code for The MathMagical Software Company has been written there, my computer art, and the three websites that I look after. In the same room is a Windows millennium machine, used for internet access and email. Also in the house is my partner's new Apple laptop, a Macbook Pro, which I'm exploring in an unhurried way. The screenshots of the emulated BBC Micro in this issue were taken on that. At work I've got a Kinetic Risc PC on which innumerable lesson plans and worksheets have been composed, and on which a ton of tedious administrative tasks get done. A Windows XP machine in my classroom gets used for web and email from school. So, six.

For inclusion in this issue, I had my eye on a 1998 desktop silly from Keith Gaughan. Having linked to his website, I discovered that RUDrunk didn't run under RISC OS 6. Strange: on RISC OS 4 and 5 it worked fine. Rather than abandon the plan, I took a look at the BBC BASIC code within. Although the RunImage was compressed and unusable, most of the source code was there. It took a couple of hours to rebuild the missing parts, and then a few more moments to identify and sort out the bug. An update to Keith's ten year old program is the result.
Originally intended for Acorn User it was never published because the *Info feature was dropped. Whilst inside the application, I adjusted the program's template file to make it more challenging. Try running several copies of the program at the same time. Have a few other windows open for those you chase to hide behind. Whilst your mind is focussed on all of that, don't forget to drink your beer !
