In 1985 I was comissioned to write a Numerology computer program for Falmouth astrologer Ann-Marie. Numerology is a system of determining a person's character according to the rhythms and sounds of their name.

The BBC BASIC program took two months to write on an Acorn Electron. It handled the mathematics of turning a name into a number, and described the associated personality. The majority of development time was spent in researching the traditional Hebrew methods so that the character reading given was as authentic as possible.

The program was a money spinner, and pulled in casual trade as it passed the 'new age' shop. For £1 a time, customers entered a name and received an immediate print out of the corresponding numerologiocal character. The program was 'cutting edge' and the code jealously kept private by Ann-Marie.

In 2005, the copyright reverted to me. If truth be told, I'm a sceptic, but as an amusement, numerology can be fun. I've updated the 23 year old software to turn it into a proper RISC OS desktop application and am making it available as a free RISCOScode download. The copyright remains with me.

In the ancient language of the Hebrews, every letter was associated with a number - they had no separate number system - and vowels, although spoken, had no physical written representation. Thus the Hebrews quite naturally saw a person's name as also being a number. The consonants representing how a person appeared, while the vowels represented their spirit - the motivation behind the visible. These ideas are quite foreign to the average Briton. The following table is the established 'translation' that converts the sounds of English into Hebrew.

The Hebrews 'cast out nines'. For example, 563, is seen as 5+6+3 = 14 = 1+4 = 5. Thus, Gordon Brown becomes 3+7+2+4+7+5 + 2+2+7+6+5 = 5 overall, with first name 1, second name 4, consonants 2, and vowels 3.

Numerology is RISC OS software : to run it on Windows or Apple machines you will need an emulator such as that sold by Virtual Acorn.
